I founded Burton and Dogs in January of 2017. The goal of the one-man operation was to create a career for myself based on physical exercise that increased the amount of joy in my life. But it turned out that walking dogs (and pet sitting) did a lot more than that. The dogs loved it. And so did their human owners. I was told by clients on numerous occasions that my services were changing their lives in significant ways. And what started as a personal pursuit of a healthy, happier lifestyle naturally grew into a mission-driven business based on the prioritization of the happiness of everyone (and every-dog) who interacted with the company.
In 2022 I had more clients than I could personally handle. A couple of my brothers joined me and took a significant load off of my shoulders. Later, we hired another team member and then a few more. Today, the business consists of 6+ people besides me, all of whom are part time. In the coming months we plan to hire several more in preparation for the launch of what will become our cornerstone service—Group Dog Walks. 2026 is going to be fun!
The ultimate reason our company exists is to increase joy and optimism in the world through physical exercise, pet care, and positive human connection. We believe that when we put the joy of dogs first, the impact extends far beyond the individual dog, because when dogs are happy, we humans who love them are happy too, which bleeds into our interactions with other humans. Our optimism is that this makes society as a whole a happier place.
To us, our jobs are about More Than Just Dog Walking.

One of the most impactful things dog owners can do for the physical and psychological health of their dogs is to ensure they are walked regularly. And that's exactly what we provide. Dog Walking is our "bread and butter" service.

Dogs are happiest in the environments they know best. Most canines do not enjoy boarding facilities. When you hire us for overnight pet sitting, they get to keep their usual routines, sleep in their usual places, and enjoy their usual food.

Each Dog Walking service event at Burton and Dogs comes with a promise that we will arrive within an hour of your preferred target time. During client on-boarding, we set this expectation—and then we meet it. Or the walk is free.

Everyone on staff at Burton and Dogs has been selected based in part on their ability to communicate with clients creatively and with humor and joy. And our post-visit updates are the means through which all of us aim to bring smiles to your face.

Not everything always goes exactly right 100% of the time. Sparky will have an accident of some kind. He'll eat something he shouldn't. Whatever the case, we teach our staff that when things go wrong during pet care, it is an opportunity to earn trust by telling the truth about it.

We want to be a force for happiness everywhere. To this end, we allocate a small percentage of total revenues to a bank account that gets drained every quarter to support the most effective charities that improve global wellbeing. Just 1% for now, but that's only the start.
Whether it's 30 to 45 to even 60-minute exercise sessions, or shorter potty breaks, Dog Walking is the main way we seek to enhance the physical and mental wellbeing of dogs.
Connor has been house sitting for clients since the very beginning of Burton and Dogs—and he isn't stopping now. He provides two pet sitting services: a Standard Overnight and the premium Live-In.

Over 9+ years of photographing dogs, we have learned how to get pretty amazing shots of them, fairly consistently. Every post-visit report card includes at least 4 photos, but we often attach 10 or more.

As part of their training, our staff members complete a many hours-long course in professional pet care. Each Sitter earns a CPS-DW certification in professional Dog Walking and Pet Sitting before visiting their first dog.

Connor, the owner of Burton and Dogs, is highly knowledgeable about canine behavior. He is currently enrolled at ABC to further that knowledge and will be equipped with a CCDT certification by Fall 2026.

Each of our staff members completes an online certification course in basic pet first aid so they can identify abnormal behaviors and recognize when and how to make an intervention during a health crisis.

We are covered by Pet Care Insurance (PCI) in case things don't go as smoothly as they almost always do. We've never had to use it, but it's important to be prepared for incidents such as injury to pets or damage to property.

When I was in high school I was often asked what I wanted to do in the world. The truth was that I always wanted to be a professional athlete. My sport of choice was baseball. But, unfortunately, my body was more liable to damage than other people's, and so after a series of injuries that included a fractured growth plate, an inguinal hernia, and a slipped disk in my spine, I realized by my Junior year that sports weren’t going to dispense my ticket to a fruitful career.
So I wasn't bound for the big leagues, but I knew that I wanted to do something with my body, something that kept me active. With my pursuit of sports gone, however, my sense of meaning went away with it, and so I became depressed for many years after high school. I lived at home well into my twenties, taking the occasional janitorial, overnight stocker, or merchandiser job and attending community college on a part time basis. While at home I had our two family dogs for company, and I realized something: I was always happiest when I was with them. One day, towards the end of 2016, my mother suggested that I leverage my love for animals and offer pet sitting services to family and neighbors – and after some research, something clicked.
I knew what I wanted to do, and so I started a dog walking company. Later, when I started to get clients, I experienced a rush of fulfillment that compelled me forward and gave me dozens of adorable reasons to get up in the morning. It brings me so much joy to walk dogs and I can tell by the smiling faces and wagging tails of my canine clients that they love it too. I feel incredibly lucky to have been able to create a business that is self-supporting, and I have dreams of doing much more. Thank you to all of my clients, both present and future, who give me something to do, something to strive for, and something to dream about after sports.
